Last Tuesday, a 3-year-old boy was taken to the emergency room of Safra Tel Hashomer Hospital after vomiting repeatedly. Initially, it was suspected to be stomach upset and appendicitis was feared, but it was later discovered that the child had swallowed three magnets and was at risk of a serious infection and a serious deterioration of his condition.
“The boy vomited about 7-8 times at home and his parents rushed him to the hospital’s emergency room,” Dr. Daniel Shinhar, head of pediatric surgery at Tel Hashomer Hospital, told Walla. “His stomach was completely soft and nothing abnormal was found. He underwent an ultrasound and all results and indicators were normal. We believe it is viral and we are monitoring it. A day later, the child was already submerged.”
“From the moment the child went into a depressed state and became unresponsive, the pediatric unit suspected there was something in the stomach that they might have missed,” said Dr. Singhal. “We rushed him to surgery, which took about an hour and a half, and we glued the rings to his springs and sealed the five holes. We then spoke to the parents and asked them if the child was playing with a magnet, and they didn’t know how he got there, but he swallowed it. Unfortunately, we have a lot of experience with young children putting these things in their mouths.”
