After repairing the Barents Strait: MSF asks Italy to release the ship again

Doctors Without Borders has criticised the Italian authorities’ decision to detain the rescue ship Geo Barents for 60 days.

In a letter on Wednesday The aid organization criticized the decision of Italian authorities to arrest Gio Barents for alleged violations of safety regulations. As MSF writes, the arrest decision on Tuesday followed several rescue operations on August 23.

One of the actions, according to the Italian complaint, is that Doctors Without Borders failed to notify the Italian government in time for an emergency rescue. The aid organization rejects this criticism. It will rely on information from the Libyan Coast Guard. However, these people will be accused by the United Nations of participating in serious human rights violations and colluding with human traffickers.

According to Doctors Without Borders, five rescue operations were carried out in Geo Barents on August 23. During the third attempt, Italian authorities who rescued the child were not notified in time. The aid organization said it took action when a large number of people from a migrant boat in the Geo Barents Sea region fell into the water near the ship. As this happened in the middle of the night, action had to be taken quickly to save people’s lives.

MSF asks the Italian authorities to allow the Geo Barents to escape again so that it can once again fulfil its mission of saving human lives. Repairs to the ship will also be mandatory under the law.
