“As a novice leader, I was a quack,” admits Estonia’s top state official, State Secretary Taimar Peterkop. That meant going into detail, making employees wait for deadlines and results, and making toxic comments.
“But the more I worked with people who were smarter than me, the more I realized you had to be more sensitive in your approach to people,” he explains. “Setting goals, following through on them, and getting the work done had to be more seamless and co-created.”
Where did the buy-in for this change in leadership come from, what does a state secretary do in government, what does it take to be successful in this job, why did he have to get his family’s approval before accepting the position, and what can Estonian leaders learn from other countries’ prime ministers about how to handle crises well and how to lead smart people?
