August 28, 2024 – It is a heartbreaking story that two Samoan RSE workers who were returning home this week were killed in a major car accident in Auckland on Monday.
Media reports likened the crash scene to a horror movie scene that occurred on the Auckland Highway between Mumbai and Ramalama town just before 2pm on Monday.
Immigration New Zealand national manager Pacific Loua Ward said the occupants of the truck included five workers from Samoa Seasonal Employers working at the Eastpack Ōpōtiki factory.
She said the van was driven by a family member of an RSE worker and was taking them to Auckland to visit family before returning to Samoa on Thursday.
“Unfortunately, the driver and two workers died in the accident while three other passengers are being treated in hospital.

One of the vehicles damaged in the accident.
Eastpack Ōpōtiki site manager Tai Shepherd said they were “extremely shocked and heartbroken” by the news.
“They are both great people and important parts of our team, and our hearts go out to their loved ones.”
The accident involved a truck and three other cars and paralyzed the busy main road.
Emergency services and bystanders rushed through debris and wreckage strewn across the highway to treat the injured – some in their cars, others lying on the roadside – in an image one resident said would stay with her for a long time.
Three people in the same vehicle died, three others were seriously injured, and others were taken to hospital with moderate injuries.
A witness said the truck appeared to be traveling southbound when it suddenly blew a tire and veered northbound, breaking through the median wire and hitting a truck.
Twisted and broken wire barriers marked the vehicle’s path, but the exact sequence of events leading up to the accident was unclear.
