In order to provide assistance to people with limited mobility during natural disasters, the police regularly update the database of people in need of assistance in low-lying areas of the city. The assurance was left by Han Wei, chairman of the Institute for Social Action (IAS), in response to a question from councillor Ho Yun-sheng.
As part of “disaster emergency response operations,” before the typhoon season begins, “security forces and services systematically screen residents and traders in low-lying areas most vulnerable to flooding, collect and update information and identify situations that may require evacuation support,” according to Hon.
The data is then uploaded to the system for use in case a designated area needs to be evacuated.
During the inquiry, Ho expressed concern about the movement of people with reduced mobility during natural disasters and asked the government to draw up a list that could be used in emergencies.
Accessibility support
Regarding support for people in need, the IAS also assured that the so-called “pilot project for providing barrier-free support coordinators” is underway. The plan involves sending specialized personnel to provide barrier-free access to different public services.
According to the introduction, “Currently, the ‘pilot project’ involves 14 public service agencies, a total of 22 service points, and a total of 60 barrier-free support coordinators.” After summarizing the experience, the Macao SAR government plans to gradually extend the pilot to other service industries and is preparing for full implementation.
