27 August 2024 (UN) – The United Nations Security Council is considering sanctions against two generals of Sudan’s Rapid Support Forces (RSF) for their role in the ongoing conflict, the first such action related to the current war.
According to Reuters, diplomats revealed that the United States has formally proposed a travel ban and asset freeze on Osman Mohammed Hamid Mohammed, the head of operations of the Rapid Security Force, and Abdul Rahman Juma Balkara, the commander of the Rapid Security Force in West Darfur.
The designations will be confirmed if there are no objections from the 15-member Sudan sanctions committee by Friday afternoon.
Sudan’s war, which broke out in mid-April last year, has been marred by ethnic violence and the RSF has faced accusations of widespread human rights abuses. The RSF denies the charges.
The conflict has triggered a severe humanitarian crisis, with nearly 25 million people in need of assistance and millions displaced.
While the Security Council imposed sanctions on individuals in connection with the Darfur conflict earlier this century, the proposed sanctions would be the first imposed by the United Nations in response to the current conflict.
