The Red Sea Film Fund continues its presence and participation at international film festivals, this time at the 81st Venice Film Festival, August 28-September 7, 2024, with six films that received support from the Red Sea Fund.
The films in the competition include: Aisha, by Tunisian director Mehdi Barsawi, which will be screened in the prestigious “Orizzonte” section. The film won the Red Sea Market Award at the second edition of the Red Sea International Film Festival. As for the film “Finding a Way for Mr. Rimbaud”, by Egyptian director Khaled Mansour, it will be screened as part of “Orizzonte Extra”, a new achievement for Egyptian cinema, which returns today to the festival competition at the Venice Film Festival after a ten-year hiatus. It is worth noting that the film is also one of the films selected for the “Cabin” program of the Red Sea Lab in 2021 and has received support from the Red Sea Fund in 2023. As for the film “Aisha Cannot”, “Fly”, by Egyptian director Mourad Mostafa, and “Even in the Dark I See You”, by Lebanese director Nadim Tabet, will be screened for the third consecutive year as part of the “Final Cut” program supported by the Fund, awarding a prize of 5,000 euros to the winning films in the post-production stage. In addition to these outstanding films, Tunisian-French director Hind Al Madab’s film “Sultanya Ghali” and Chinese director Jiang Xiaoshuang’s Northeast Asian film “Killing a Mongolian Horse” will also be screened in the “Magazine Degli Autori” section.
During the Venice Film Festival, the Red Sea Foundation supported for the fourth consecutive year the “amfAR” charity gala hosted by Jumana Rashid Al-Rashed, Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Red Sea Cinema Foundation, along with other luminaries from the film industry, including: Achille Borioli, Willem Dafoe, Matteo Fantacciotti, Alejandra Guiri, Andre Gilot, Harry Goodwins, T. Ryan Greenwalt, Lucien Laviscount, Julian Lennon, Tony Mansilla, Kevin McClatchy, Catherine O’Hara, Finn Roberti, Caroline Schaefer, David Tait, Amir Olyard and John Watts.
Commenting on the broad participation, Jumana Rashid Al-Rashed, Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Red Sea Film Foundation, said: “The Foundation is proud to support six films that have been able to participate in prestigious international film festivals such as the Venice Film Festival. The film festival reflects the strength and importance of Middle Eastern, African and Asian cinema, noting that the Foundation is keen to continue its role in supporting creativity, knowledge and cultural diversity, especially this year by supporting its expansion into Asia.” Provided to Chinese director Jiang Xiaochuan. On the other hand, Al-Rashid pointed out the importance of continuing the collaboration with the “Final Cut” initiative, which has so far produced two innovative film projects by talented filmmakers from all over the region.
It is worth noting that the “Final Cut” supported by the Red Sea Film Fund during the Venice Film Festival is a development initiative that, since 2013, has provided tangible support to films from the African continent and five countries in the Middle East: Iraq, Lebanon, Palestine and Syria. The initiative belongs to the “Venice Bridge Productions” program. One of the programs of the Venice Film Festival, directed by Alberto Barbera and organized by the Venice Biennale. The program provides the opportunity to present films still in production to international film professionals in order to promote post-production and smooth access to the international film market.
The program will take place over three days on Venice Lido, during the 81st Venice Film Festival, from September 1 to 3, 2024, where a selection of films and festival programmers will be screened in front of an elite group of producers and distributors.
Notably, since its inception in 2021, the Red Sea Film Fund has supported more than 250 film projects from the Arab world, Africa and Asia, in addition to launching numerous initiatives to support storytelling and the film industry in the region.
It is worth noting that the fourth Red Sea International Film Festival will open in Jeddah from December 5 to 14, 2024.
