SpaceX announced that due to a “helium leak”, the company will postpone the launch of its first private space mission by 24 hours, during which time the astronauts were supposed to perform a “spacewalk.”
The flight, scheduled to take off today from Florida, will be historic because it will allow passengers to leave the capsule and go into space protected only by spacesuits for the first time on a private mission.
“The SpaceX team is checking for any helium leaks on the ground,” Ilona Maska’s company wrote on the X Network.
Helium is a non-flammable gas that is often used to seal rocket fuel tanks.
The mission, called Polaris Dawn, was delayed by 24 hours.
The new liftoff is scheduled for 3:38 a.m. local time tomorrow, but SpaceX has warned that subsequent mission launches may be delayed.
