(CPL) Defending champions Barbados Royals qualified for the 2024 Women’s Caribbean Premier League (WCPL) finals in Masi by defeating Guyana Amazon Warriors by 17 runs at the Brian Lara Cricket Academy in Tarouba, Trinidad.
Under the lights, Ball dominated in a testing wicket. Royals was substituted in after Warriors captain Lauren Winfield-Hill won the toss and Hayley Matthews’ side struggled to get past the infield or find boundaries in the early stages. Matthews conceded just two runs from 13 deliveries, while the usually smooth-bowing Chamari Attarpantu scored 15 runs from 27 deliveries before being bowled by Chloe Tryon.
The Royals had a tough time all the way against the fierce pitching, adding just 25 runs in the PowerPlay, with the score at the end of the first ten overs at 33. Erin Burns again played for the Warriors, this time with the ball in hand, returning with figures of 3/31 in four overs, as the Royals totaled 101/8 in 20. Qiana Joseph top-scored for the 2023 champions with 19 runs, the slow left-arm bowler later becoming the Man of the Match with figures of 3/16.
The Warriors found it just as tough on the counterattack. The Royals applied pressure and showed grace and composure in defending the small target. When Erin Burns, the tournament’s top scorer, was dismissed by Athanpanthu in the twelfth over, the Warriors finished at 44/5 and there was no hope for the Winfield-Hill side.
The Royals are winning again and are getting stronger this year, now it just remains to see who they will face in the final on Thursday, with the Trinidad Knights and Guyana Amazon Warriors both tied on two points. Deandra Dodin’s Knights have a chance to secure a place in the final, but in order to do so they must find a way to beat the unbeaten and dominant Royals tomorrow night.
