A high-speed pursuit began in Belgium, crossed into Luxembourg and culminated in the arrest of the driver in Niederkern on Monday evening.
On Monday evening, Luxembourg police received a call from Belgian police about a high-speed car chase that had started in Belgium and crossed the border into Luxembourg, with three people on board. In addition, the driver had been involved in high-speed chases before.
The driver sped across the border, driving recklessly through the areas of Linge, Ocharage and Bascharage before approaching the Biff roundabout, at which point Belgian police lost track of the vehicle.
Luxembourg police responded quickly and, with the help of witnesses, patrols managed to find the car on Rue Nic Meyers in Hautcharage. However, when the police arrived, only one person was left in the car. This person fled again, heading towards Niederkorn, and was almost hit by a police officer on a motorcycle who tried to stop the vehicle.
The pursuit continued until the driver lost control of the vehicle at the Niederkorn roundabout and crashed head-on into a streetlight. He sustained minor injuries and was quickly arrested by police. The other two occupants of the car have not yet been found.
Subsequent drug tests showed the driver was under the influence and further checks confirmed he was banned from driving in Belgium. Police found the car was neither registered nor insured. Inside the car, officers found various drugs, a machete, pepper spray and a mobile phone.
The police have informed the prosecutor of the incident and arrested the driver. The police thanked the public for their help in quickly finding the suspect.
