The risk of a larger war in the Middle East has since decreased. Israel and Hezbollah face offReuters quoted US Joint Chiefs of Staff Chairman General Charles Brown as saying that the move would not lead to further escalation of the situation.

Egypt says Gaza talks failed to reach deal, constructive for US

Brown gave an exclusive interview to Reuters yesterday after concluding a three-day trip to the Middle East.

He arrived in Israel on Sunday evening – just hours after clashes broke out between the two sides – after having travelled to Egypt and Jordan.

“We know two things are going to happen. One of them has already happened (Hezbollah shelling Israel – Editor’s note). Now it depends on how the second card is played (Iran’s expected response – Editor’s note),” the senior US military official said in an interview published early this morning, while on a plane to the United States.

How Iran responds will determine Israel’s response, and Israel’s response will determine whether a wider conflict breaks out.

Meanwhile, the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff warned of risks posed by Iran-linked groups in countries including Iraq, Syria and Jordan.

He singled out the Houthis, calling the Yemeni rebels “unpredictable” and saying they have attacked ships in the Red Sea and even launched drones at Israel.
