The Bureau of Meteorology has issued a yellow weather warning, warning that heavy rain, flooding and power outages are expected.
The UK Bank Holiday weekend started out cloudy before clearing up as people braced themselves for more wet and windy weather.
A yellow weather warning is in place for much of south-west Scotland.
The policy went into effect at 3 a.m. today and will last until 7 p.m. Tuesday.
Scotland has already been hit by heavy rain, with officials warning that train delays and timetable changes are expected to continue until 2pm.
“Inclement weather” has disrupted travel for commuters on Glasgow’s Queen Street and is set to continue throughout the day.
National Rail has confirmed speed restrictions are in place on tracks between major Scottish stations and Mallaig/Oban.
The Met Office said parts of England and Wales will remain dry and sunny today, with temperatures rising in the south and east.
Most areas will become dry again on Wednesday, with temperatures peaking in the southeast by mid-week.
However, heavy rain and strong winds will slowly move eastwards starting on Wednesday and until the end of the work week.
Nick Silkstone, deputy chief meteorologist at the Met Office, said: “A period of warmer weather will begin across southern and eastern parts of the UK from the middle of this week.
“On Wednesday temperatures will reach a maximum of 29C in the south east, with sunny weather expected across much of England and Wales.
“While the initial warmth will be relatively short-lived and temperatures will return to average on Thursday, the weather will continue to become drier and more settled in the second half of the week under the influence of high pressure.
“The main exception is likely to be the North West where cloudy and rainy conditions will continue later in the week, although there will be some drier and brighter breaks here as well.”
