Polish airspace ‘violated’
NATO member Poland said its airspace was violated in the ballistic missile attack, possibly by a drone.
“We are probably dealing with a situation where an object entered Polish territory. The object was confirmed by at least three radiolocation stations,” General Maciej Kliš, the armed forces’ operational commander, told reporters.
Jacek Goryszewski, a spokesman for the army command, said it was “most likely” an Iranian-designed Shahed-type drone used by the Russian military.
“But this has to be verified,” he told AFP, adding that it could not be ruled out that the drone had left Polish territory.
Zelensky called on European air forces to help Kiev shoot down drones and missiles in the future.
“In different regions of Ukraine, we could do more to protect lives if the aviation of our European neighbors worked in conjunction with our F-16s and air defense forces,” Zelensky said in his speech.
Zelenskiy’s chief of staff, Andriy Yermak, said the attack showed that Kiev needed permission to “use Western weapons deep into Russian territory.”
Zelensky said Ukraine’s sudden cross-border incursion into Russia’s Kursk region on August 6 was “intended, among other things, to compensate for the lack of range.”
On Sunday, he said the raid had yielded further progress, however modest.

Monday’s airstrike came after Reuters security consultant Ryan Evans was killed in a missile attack on a hotel in eastern Ukraine late Saturday.
Lamy in Britain said he was “deeply saddened to learn of his death”.
Six staff members of the agency covering the war were staying in a hotel in Kramatorsk, the last major city in the Donetsk region under Ukrainian control.
Asked about Zelenskiy’s claim that the attack was carried out “intentionally,” the Kremlin said there was “still no clear answer” about the strike.
“I repeat, this attack was directed against military infrastructure targets or targets connected to military infrastructure,” Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said.
Zelensky said defending the logistics hub of Pokrovsk in the Donetsk region was “most difficult” as Ukraine reinforced its positions there.
A fire at an oil refinery in the border Siberian city of Omsk on Monday killed one person and injured six people, regional governor Vitaly Khodenko said.
Authorities did not specify the source of the fire.
Russian media reported that a huge explosion was heard near the refinery, which is operated by Russian oil giant Gazprom and is about 2,300 kilometers from Ukraine.
Ukraine regularly launches drone attacks on Russian oil and gas infrastructure, sometimes far from the Russian border.
