This Monday, Ruben Amorim was awarded the first Football League Best Coach Award for the 2023/24 season, a season in which he led Sporting Lisbon to its 20th national title, repeating the feat achieved in the 2020/21 season.
“When we look at the performance of a team, we find (these individual awards) a bit reductive and that is what we celebrate here. Generally, the best coach (distinction) wins the title, but this award is not just ours”, the 39-year-old coach cited several elements of the “Leonine” structure in his speech at the Portuguese League Awards in Alfandega, Porto.
Rúben Amorim was the player who received the most votes for coach and captain of the 18 junior league clubs, and in this season he replaced the now deceased former national team coach Artur Jorge, becoming the youngest Portuguese coach to win the competition twice out of 40, having played twice for FC Porto (1984/85 and 1985/86).
