New York: Former champion Dominic Thiem’s final match at the US Open ended in a dull manner as he was beaten 6-4, 6-2, 6-2 by American Ben Shelton in the first round on Monday.
The Austrian player has struggled to recreate the form that saw him win the 2020 Flushing Meadows Championships and announced he would retire this season after suffering from wrist injuries in recent years.
Shelton relied on his powerful forehand and served up more than eight aces in the opening set at Arthur Ashe Stadium, with the 21-year-old looking to recreate the magic that saw him reach the semi-finals 12 months ago.
Although Thiem was troubled by his serve problems, he showed that he still had a fighting spirit, fending off two break points in the 10th game, but the relentless Shelton forced Thiem into an error on the third attempt, thus breaking the serve and winning the first set.
The American saved Thiem’s only break chance in the first game of the second set, but the Austrian allowed Shelton to break again in the second game with a double fault and an unforced error.
Shelton broke Thiem again to take the second set, showing how dangerous he is in the next two weeks, and in the third set he cruised to a confident victory with 34 winners.
