Parliament resumed this afternoon with UTM MPs split into two groups, with one sitting on the government benches and the other on the opposition benches.
Two months ago, the party leader, Dr Saulos Chilima, was tragically killed in a plane crash in Chikangawa forest in Mzimba State, which led to a faction of the party exiting the Tonse Alliance.
Most of those who support the current UTM leader, Dr Michael Usi, are Cabinet Ministers who continue to hold government positions.
In addition, members of parliament from political parties that withdrew from the East Sri Lanka Alliance still occupy government seats.
These include BJP MPs who are still in the government.
In addition to these changes, the parliament’s seat covers have also changed from blue to black and red.
The old lid was 10 years old.
Speaker of the National Assembly Catherine Gotani Hara explained that the change was to reflect the government’s position.
Hou Yayuan also mentioned that the previous blue seat covers had worn out, so he decided to replace them.
At the start of the meeting, Gotanihara asked members to observe a minute of silence for the victims of the plane crash, which included the vice president and eight others.
In addition, a new “E Chambers” system was introduced to enable the digital transformation of parliamentary procedures.
Members also expressed concern about darkness in the house due to electrical faults.
The Speaker assured them that an electrical consultant had been hired to resolve the issue.
