Oman national team prepares for 2026 World Cup qualifiers

Oman’s national football team will return to training on Wednesday in preparation for its opening 2026 World Cup qualifier against Iraq.

A short domestic training camp will be held at the Sultan Qaboos Stadium, and the team delegation will travel to Basra, Iraq on September 3, with the match to be held on September 5. The official opening match of the decisive qualifier will kick off at 8pm (Oman time) at the Basra International Stadium.

“We visited the city of Basra from August 6 to 8 before the team’s arrival. The purpose of the visit was to ensure that accommodation and training facilities were ready, as well as to ensure the presence of fans to cheer on the national team. The delegation that visited Basra consisted of Assistant Head Coach Ali al Khanbashi, Team Manager Hussain al Zadjali and Nasser al Busaidi, representative of the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Youth,” said Hussain al Zadjali.

“My main mission during this visit will be to arrange accommodation and logistics for the team, which have been confirmed. I will also depart before the team delegation arrives in Basra, which I will arrive on September 1 and the delegation will arrive two days later. The team will stay at the Grand Millennium Hotel in Basra and training will be held at the Al Fayhaa Sports Club, which can accommodate about 10,000 fans. There are no friendly matches scheduled before the Iraq match. The current focus is on increasing the number of training sessions and keeping the players in good shape,” he added.

“The team plans to return to Muscat the day after the tournament and start an internal training camp in Muscat on September 6. The next match will be against South Korea in Muscat on September 10 and the match will start at 6 pm (Oman time). We hope to get support from the fans in the first two matches against Iraq and South Korea. The first matches are crucial for the team’s campaign in the qualifiers,” he added.

The Ministry of Culture, Sports and Youth (MoCSY) recently launched a campaign in support of the national football team in direct cooperation with the Oman Football Association (OFA), whose main task is to participate in the final round of Asian qualifiers to qualify and enter the 2026 World Cup. The slogan of the campaign is “We are with you”.

The logo symbolizes movement, speed and boldness and is designed in a single color to be used across various platforms including television, print advertising and social media.

Oman is in a balanced Group B, which includes South Korea, Iraq, Jordan, Palestine and Kuwait. Oman has high hopes of entering the World Cup. On September 5, Oman will play an away game against Iraq in Basra, kicking off the Asian qualifiers. On September 10, Oman will play a key match at home against South Korea.

The Reds will then face Kuwait in Muscat on October 10, followed by Jordan in Amman on October 15. The final round of matches will be against Palestine on November 14.

The second leg will be played at home against Iraq in Muscat on November 19, 2025, before travelling to Seoul to face South Korea on March 20, 2025, followed by a match against Kuwait on March 25, 2025. The final group match will be played in Muscat on June 5, 2025 against Jordan, and the final match will be played away against Palestine on June 10, 2025.
