Two people were taken to hospital and more than 100 residents were evacuated as a fire tore through a building in the east London.

London Fire Brigade (LFB) said they were carrying out a “major search and rescue operation” at the scene of the fire on Freshwater Road in Dagenham after being called to the scene on Monday.

The London Fire Brigade said 45 fire engines and about 225 firefighters were battling the blaze which engulfed the mixed-use commercial and residential building and also burned scaffolding and the roof around the building.

London Fire Commissioner Andy Rowe declared a major incident so the fire service could focus its resources on extinguishing the fire.
