August 25, 2024 (GEIDARIF) – Cholera cases have surged in five regions of Sudan’s eastern Geidaref state, health officials said on Sunday, amid concerns over a poor government response.

The Gedaref emergency department reported 125 cases and seven deaths. Most of the infections occurred in the Wad al-Hiliu area.

“The district with the most cases is Wadhiliu, with 70 infections, while Al Fashka has 20 cases,” a health official told Sudan Tribune.

The official, who spoke on condition of anonymity, criticised the government’s response and failure to implement preventive measures.

“Some areas are yet to receive water purification,” the official said.

Sudan’s Ministry of Health reported last week that the number of cholera cases nationwide had risen to 556. The country is also facing an increase in cases of malaria, conjunctivitis and night blindness.

Sudan often experiences disease outbreaks during the rainy season due to flooding and poor sanitation.
