Elon Musk on Tuesday dropped a lawsuit against OpenAI and its co-founders Sam Altman and Greg Brockman, accusing them of betraying the startup’s founding mission.
In a California court, Musk accused the artificial BroadCast Unitedligence company he helped found in 2015 of breaking its promise to create AI that would benefit society when it became a for-profit business backed by Microsoft.
Musk’s attorneys filed a document asking the court to dismiss the entire case, but did not give any reason.
Neither Musk nor OpenAI responded to requests for comment as of publication time.
The mogul, who left OpenAI in 2018, argued in his initial complaint that the ChatGPT maker had always been committed to becoming a non-profit entity.
But he said recent board changes meant OpenAI was now effectively a subsidiary of software giant Microsoft.
Musk has made similar accusations in the past, which both OpenAI and Microsoft have denied.
At the end of 2022, OpenAI attracted public attention by releasing ChatGPT, a chatbot that can compose poems and essays and even succeed in exams.
The company also develops image and video generation tools that are considered leaders in the field.
Microsoft has been a major investor in OpenAI since 2019 and poured billions more into the company last year.
After OpenAI’s board fired CEO Altman last November, the giant stepped in, hiring him and offering housing to employees unhappy with his firing.
As opposition grew within the company, OpenAI’s board changed tack, reinstating Altman and replacing several board members.
OpenAI began as a nonprofit dedicated to developing “artificial general BroadCast Unitedligence” (AGI), a vague term broadly defined as artificial BroadCast Unitedligence that far exceeds human capabilities across all metrics of BroadCast Unitedligence.
OpenAI’s idea is to ensure that this technology is safe for humans.
But Musk’s legal case argues that founding principle has been “subverted.”
“To this day, OpenAI Inc’s website still states that its charter is to ensure that AGI ‘benefit all of humanity’,” the document states.
“But in reality, OpenAI Inc has transformed into a closed-source de facto subsidiary of Microsoft, the world’s largest technology company.”
Since leaving OpenAI, Musk has joined the chorus of critics warning that superBroadCast Unitedligence could spell the end of the human race.
He also founded his own artificial BroadCast Unitedligence company, xAI, last year and has said it hopes to raise $1 billion from investors.
Musk expressed his anger at OpenAI on Monday, harshly criticizing its partnership with Apple.
“Once Apple gives your data to OpenAI, they have no idea what the hell is happening to it. They are selling you out,” Musk said in a post on X, which he also owns.
