“I am following with pain the fighting in Ukraine and the Russian Federation,” Pope Francis said during a ceremony at the Vatican today.
“Also, given the law recently passed in Ukraine, there are concerns about the freedom of those who pray, because those who really pray always pray for everyone. There is no harm in praying.
If someone does evil to his people, he is guilty, but he cannot do evil because he prays,” the pope said.
“Then let those who want to pray do so in what they consider to be their church. I ask that the Christian Church not be abolished, directly or indirectly. Churches not touch each other!”, the pope said
Ukraine passes law banning Orthodox churches from having ties to Russia
President Volodymyr Zelensky has signed a law banning Orthodox churches with ties to Moscow from entering Ukraine. The decision was published on the Ukrainian parliament’s website.
Zelensky approved the law, which was criticized by Moscow, on August 24, 1991, the day Kiev gained independence from the Soviet Union, two and a half years after the Russian invasion.
Pope Francis said people who pray to this church are not responsible for the war.
