Authorities in the Dominican Republic have seized a large shipment of cocaine at the Boca Chica port in Santo Domingo in one of the country’s most significant drug busts this year.

The operation was part of a new drug counter-strategy and saw drug enforcement officers seize more than 3,000 pounds of cocaine bound for Hamburg, Germany.

The illegal shipment was reportedly discovered during a routine inspection of containers from South America. Following established procedures, anti-drug agents and military personnel discovered discrepancies in one of the containers and conducted a thorough inspection.

After investigation, customs officers found 1,585 packages of cocaine hidden in 317 boxes of lemons.

The drugs were disguised in a fruit shipment that departed from the port of Santa Marta, Colombia, via the Dominican Republic and was destined for Hamburg, Germany.
