By Robert A. Emanuel (Antigua Observer) The government’s proposal to impose a nighttime curfew on under-18s will include “exceptions,” Information Minister Melford Nicholas said yesterday.
The government plans to pass legislation at the next parliamentary session to introduce a limited curfew in the hope of curbing youth gang activity.
Once enacted, the law will make it illegal for any teenager to be on the street outside their home without a parent or guardian between 10 p.m. and 5 a.m.
The government said several exceptions would be built into the law, including the introduction of a curfew pass system to ensure young people involved in work, education or active extracurricular activities could get exceptions.
“The purpose of the curfew is not to be in place indefinitely, but to be in place for as long as it takes to curb this anti-social behaviour,” he said. “So in the initial stages we do not anticipate any restrictions on the curfew, but it is a measure that will be implemented and once we see the corrective measures starting to be implemented then, of course, the curfew will be relaxed.”
The minister said the government may adopt a curfew similar to that used during the COVID-19 pandemic.
