The presidential candidate of the Democratic Progressive Party, Professor Arthur Peter Mutharika, has confidently declared that he is ready to contest and win the 2025 general elections.
In an exclusive interview with Time TV, the former Malawian leader dismissed concerns about his age, saying: “I am in good health and I have no intention of embarrassing myself if I can’t do it.”
Mutharika, who is expected to win with 57.9 percent of the vote according to reliable sources, responded to critics who say he is too old to run for office and govern.
“Why are they worried now? Have they ever wished me good luck? My supporters are happy with me and I feel strong.”
He blamed these concerns on his political opponents, saying: “All this nonsense comes from the Malayan Communist Party – they know that once I run for election, they are out.”
Mutharika’s comments come as he prepares to face off against incumbent President Lazarus Chakwera and his Malawi Congress Party (MCP) in the 2025 general elections.
Malawians are increasingly unhappy with President Chakwera’s leadership, citing the high cost of living, unemployment and economic stagnation.
In contrast, many recall the economic stability and growth experienced during Mutharika’s tenure and hope his return to power will ease the current woes.
With Mutharika’s campaign gaining momentum and a projected 57.9% victory, Malawians may be ready to reject Chakwera’s leadership and opt for a return to PDP economic management.
