The policy shift opens the door for Prabowo’s presidential election rival Anies Baswedan to be nominated as Jakarta mayor, a post he previously held from 2017 to 2022, but it also means Jokowi’s 29-year-old son Kaesang Pangarep cannot run in regional elections.
The electoral body held a hearing on Sunday with a parliamentary committee that oversees electoral issues to ensure it has approval from lawmakers before issuing the new rules.
Attorney General Supratman Andi Agtas told the same hearing that the government would help speed up the process of issuing new regulations.
Labour is scheduled to hold another protest on Sunday, demanding that the electoral body issue new rules as soon as possible.
Jokowi, the incumbent president who has been in power for a decade, whose popularity and outsize influence helped Prabowo win a huge election in February this year, was widely seen as a quid pro quo to ensure the outgoing leader retains political benefits long after he leaves office.
