August 24, 2024 (New York) – United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres and Sudanese military leader Abdel Fattah al-Burhan have agreed to facilitate the entry of humanitarian aid into Sudan, a UN spokesman said on Saturday.
The agreement was reached during a phone call between Guterres and Burhan, who discussed in particular the delivery of aid through the town of Adre.
On August 16, Sudan announced that it would open the Adre border crossing with Chad for a period of three months, after it was closed in February.
“Both sides agreed to facilitate the entry of humanitarian aid into the country,” the spokesman said in a statement following the call.
The UN will also work with Sudanese authorities to establish a streamlined system to process and deliver aid more quickly.
The agreement comes amid a dire humanitarian crisis in Sudan, sparked by ongoing conflict between the Sudanese army and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF). Millions of people have been displaced and are in desperate need of food, water and medical supplies.
The United Nations and aid agencies have repeatedly called for unimpeded aid delivery, but fighting has hampered their efforts. The agreement with Burhan was seen as a positive step towards ensuring much-needed aid reaches those in need.
