Despite the blows that life has dealt her, Nopoko (not her real name) never thought of relying on her own efforts to earn a meagre daily income. Fighting and determined, she always knew how to hold her head high in the face of difficulties, while sticking to her career and living with dignity. However, faced with illness and physical weakness, she helplessly watched the activities that supported her gradually collapse. After knocking on several doors without success, she now counts on God’s will to get back on her feet. We convey his heartfelt call, first collected by activist Tidiane Zerbo.
Four years ago, Ms. Nopoko would never have imagined that her life would take such a dramatic turn. She was a mother of two, living a quiet life with her husband who worked in the informal sector, until death suddenly took him away one day. Now a father and mother, she mustered up the courage to fight for raising her children with dignity.
It was then that she set up a coffee kiosk in a popular area of Ouagadougou. Everything went well and customers flocked to it. She was assisted by a young girl. This allowed it to offer a wide range of services. However, difficulties soon arose. The owner of the space where the kiosk was located decided to build a shop on his plot. As a result, she was forced to work in a six-meter-high building, which significantly reduced the visibility of her business location.
Misfortunes never happen alone, and Nopoko collapsed in August 2023 from severe hypotension. She was bedridden for months and even lost her right leg and right hand. After long-term treatment, her health gradually recovered. Rehabilitation courses also restored her motor skills to about 85%. She managed to move again, but with some difficulty.
Returning to work after an illness, she had to face a new reality. The number of customers was no longer good. In addition, the owner of the plot where the device was installed had banned the sale of alcohol. His business was now reduced to the sale of tea, coffee and bread. To make matters worse, the refrigerator he used to sell cold drinks was no longer working.
Meanwhile, the young girl who helped him sell things also returned to the village. Due to her decreased motor skills, she can no longer go to the market alone at noon to cook and serve food to customers. His activities have completely slowed down and no longer bring him much. Therefore, it is difficult for her to live with her son, and her daughter was taken away by relatives shortly before she fell ill. She does not know how to pay the rent at the end of the month with her meager income.
The future seems very uncertain for Ms. Nopoko, who says she remains determined to fight. She calls on all those who are willing to help her to unite and breathe new life into her cause so that she can live with dignity.
