BRIGHTON, England: Table-toppers Brighton & Hove Albion beat Manchester United 2-1 on Saturday to continue their unbeaten run in the Premier League, with Joao Pedro scoring the winner in the fifth minute of stoppage time to give new head coach Fabian Schurzelle a win on his home debut.
Brighton striker Danny Welbeck opened the scoring against his former club before Amad Diallo equalised in the second half, with the game looking destined for a draw until the final minutes.
But Brighton’s pressure paid off as Simon Atingela found space in the box and lobbed the ball over the United defenders to an unmarked Pedro, who headed home for his side’s second win of the season.
“First of all I’m happy to have won. I think the goal at the end showed how much we wanted to win this game, the first at home against a big team,” said Pedro.
“I was in a very good mood today. I thought the team played very well.”
The 31-year-old Helzer has led Brighton to two wins, which has temporarily put Brighton at the top of the standings after two games.
United had their first chance to take the lead 10 minutes into the game when Diogo Dalot crossed the ball to the far post but Diallo’s volley failed to find the back of the net.
Shin Mitsuji received the ball on the left wing and crossed the ball through the Manchester United defense into the penalty area. Welbeck stretched his legs and shot, scoring his second goal of the season and Brighton took the lead.
This was Welbeck’s 100th goal in his club football career and his sixth against Manchester United, a club he grew up with and won the Premier League title with in the 2012-13 season.
Marcus Rashford reacted immediately at the other end by firing the ball into the net after a brilliant save from goalkeeper Jason Steele, but his celebrations were short-lived as the linesman raised his flag for offside.
Brighton almost doubled their lead early in the second half when James Milner latched onto a pass from Pedro but his shot was blocked by Dalot.
In the 60th minute of the game, Diallo received a pass to tie the game, and the 22-year-old cut inside the defense and shot, which went around goalkeeper Jason Steele and into the net.
United almost completed the comeback in the 69th minute when they broke through Brighton’s defence with a wide attack and Alejandro Garnacho fired the ball into the net.
But Joshua Zirkzee slid into the goal but the ball never reached him and he blocked it on the goal line in an offside position, with VAR ruling the goal disallowed.
