This year marks the first time the award has been held in two years.
The National Theatre of Namibia was abuzz on Saturday afternoon with the unveiling of the Standard Bank Waka Kids’ Choice Awards 2023. The much-anticipated event, held in partnership with the children’s show “Waka Waka Moo”, recognises the tireless efforts and contributions of learners, teachers and businesses in the fields of education and creativity.
It is worth noting that this is the second time the award has been given after a lapse of two years.
Directed by Luis Munana, Waka Waka Moo was created in Namibia to provide a platform for the country’s youth to showcase their talents. In addition to entertainment, it promotes educational storytelling, touching on important topics such as health, safety and financial literacy. Importantly, it tells stories in the local language, connecting directly with its target audience – Namibian children.
Made an impact
“We achieved our goals and are very happy with the results. We made an impact and sparked the conversation we wanted to spark. We are heading in the right direction in giving young people a voice,” said Kalistu Mukoroli, production manager.
Standard Bank Namibia’s partnership with ‘Waka Waka Moo’ highlights their shared belief in the potential of young people.
Magreth Mengo, the bank’s head of marketing and brand, added: “We as a brand strongly believe that this sponsorship will make a significant contribution to the industry, with the potential to impact many young lives and create a sense of purpose among children.”
NMH wins
The 2023 awards ceremony provided a stage to recognise those who stood out from the crowd, such as Fatima van Wyk from Delta Secondary School, who received the Children’s Choice Award as Outstanding Teacher.
Delta Secondary School was also recognized as a school that has made outstanding contributions to social change.
Junior Kapofi of Namibia Media Holdings’ My Zone thanked his team after winning the award for Best Children’s Television Programme.
He added: “In ‘My Zone’ we have several youth-centric shows that attract a diverse group of young people and we are happy and grateful that you voted for us.”
