The shiny new bus zipped through rush hour traffic in the Cambodian capital, bound for a school carrying educational materials about the country’s darkest period.
About two-thirds of Cambodia’s population is under 30, born a generation or more after the Khmer Rouge’s genocidal rule in the late 1970s. Many of these young people have only vague memories of the Khmer Rouge’s atrocities, which killed at least 1.7 million Cambodians.
This horrific history has been well documented, in court documents and at sites such as the Tuol Sleng Genocide Museum and Choeng Ek Killing Fields. But both are in the capital, Phnom Penh, while most Cambodians live in rural areas.
