St. Kitts and Nevis (WINN): Prime Minister and Minister of National Security Dr. Terence Drew delivered opening remarks at a Citizen Security Key Stakeholder Engagement Meeting to discuss gun violence in the Commonwealth.
Dr. Drew began by citing the National Anthem’s vision of peace and tranquility and contrasting it with the current challenge of increasing gun crime. He acknowledged the impact of violence on the nation, saying, “Our streets, once filled with life and joy, are now too often the scene of bloodshed and despair.”
Government security investment
The Prime Minister highlighted the Government’s substantial investment in national security agencies, including the largest budget allocation for security in the country’s history. These resources are intended to enhance law enforcement capabilities through improved training, technology and equipment.
He stressed the importance of community policing, aimed at building trust between law enforcement and the public. The Prime Minister announced a 90-day campaign to increase police presence in crime hotspots, with new vehicles and expanded patrols.
A comprehensive approach to crime prevention
Dr. Drew discussed the Government’s approach to addressing the root causes of crime, including social, economic and cultural factors. He reiterated the need for a new Ministry of Citizen Security to coordinate efforts to prevent violence using public health strategies. This approach is in line with the regional consensus among CARICOM leaders who see violence as a public health issue that requires comprehensive intervention.
International cooperation and enhanced security
The Prime Minister outlined the Government’s work with international partners such as the United States, Canada and the United Kingdom to strengthen border security and prevent illegal importation of firearms. The Government is expanding the closed-circuit television (CCTV) network and implementing a coastal radar system to enhance surveillance capabilities.
Dr. Drew announced further initiatives to support law enforcement, including advanced training for police officers, the reintroduction of K-9 units, and continued recruitment to ensure security forces are adequately staffed.
Youth Engagement and Substance Abuse Prevention
Dr. Drew highlighted youth engagement programs such as the Security Forces United Football Club’s summer soccer camps, which provide mentoring and skill development. He also announced a new national drug policy to address substance abuse and plans to build a recovery outreach center.
Call to Action
Finally, Dr. Drew called on all citizens to actively participate in ensuring community safety. He expressed confidence in joint efforts to address the challenges posed by violence and stressed the importance of working together to create a safer environment.
Stakeholders will continue to engage in discussions to develop collaborative solutions to enhance national security.
