Former farmer sentenced to life in prison for a massacre he did not commit
Pope Francis received in a private audience at the Apostolic Library on Friday (23rd) Beniamino Zuncheddu, a former Italian farmer who was imprisoned for 33 years for the 1991 Sinai massacre and was acquitted in January last year.
The information was released by Vatican News, which stressed that Zuncheddu was 26 years old when he was arrested and is now 60, but did not reveal further details about the meeting.
The former farmer and his lawyer wrote a book titled “I Am Innocent” about his long and tragic experience, according to the publication. He was held in three different prisons, sometimes sharing a small cell with 11 people, making it difficult to even shower or sleep.
Zuncheddu stressed that it was “an inhumane experience, but during which he was able to help people who were in a worse situation than himself.”
The former farmer also reported that he found the strength to resist, trusting in God and thinking about his family. In addition, he pledged to forgive those who accused him of multiple murders and later withdrew the accusations.
In January 1991, an attack took place in Cagliari Sinai, when a man got off a motorcycle and started shooting at several farmers, killing three and injuring one. The attack may have been caused by a dispute between two families.
Luigi Pinna, the husband of the daughter of one of the victims, accused Zucedo of being responsible for the massacre. Before claiming the former farmer was responsible for the attack, an eyewitness said he did not recognize the attacker because he was wearing a sock covering his face.
The defense has always argued that Pinner was influenced by a police officer named Mario Uda during the initial investigation. This version was recently confirmed by the eyewitness himself.
