The famous Malian singer Rokia Traor remains in the women’s prison of Civitavecchia near Rome after she was arrested on June 20 before a concert planned at the Colosseum. The singer was sentenced to two years in prison by a Belgian court in October 2023 for not introducing her daughter to her ex-partner, Belgian playwright Jan Goossens, after accusing him of sexually touching the child.
Since his arrest, the Rome Court of Appeal has held two hearings. The most important of these was on July 13, when Traor’s lawyer, Maddalena Claudia Del Re, challenged the proceedings against his conviction and asked that the case be referred to the European Court of Justice, responsible for ruling on the artist’s release or extradition to Belgium.
Italy’s Supreme Court is scheduled to meet on Thursday, August 22, to review Rokia Traor’s request for a Rome residence order, a measure that could significantly improve her detention conditions.
