New Caledonia crisis: Man seriously injured in Dumbéa on May 29 has died, nine people reportedly shot dead

NC la 1ère confirmed this Tuesday evening from official sources that a man in his 30s died from the wounds he sustained after being shot in Dumbéa on the evening of May 29. The perpetrator of the shooting was a GIGN gendarme who allegedly retaliated after being targeted.

On Wednesday, May 29, a confrontation between rioters and police took a horrific turn in Koutio, south of Doumbea.

During the exchange of fire with the elite gendarmerie GIGN, a young man was actually shot and wounded, especially in the chest. He was subsequently taken to Médipole for treatment. His life prognosis is in danger.

On Tuesday evening, June 11, NC First official sources confirmed that the man, who was about 30 years old, had succumbed to his injuries. He was believed to have died earlier today.

The chain of events that led to this new tragedy took place in a working-class and somewhat remote area, between Avenue Tonjué, Rue Alois and Rue des Lilas, close to the barricades against the voter thaw.


The incidents allegedly took place south of Dumbéa, on the Auteuil side, between Avenue de la Tonghoué, Rue des Aloès and Petite Rue des Lilas.

The official death toll from the violence that has rocked New Caledonia for nearly a month is eight. This brings the shooting death toll to nine, including seven civilians and two mobile gendarmes.
