The primary responsibility of government is to improve the lives of its people, especially when resources are limited. This happens when the government puts the needs of the nation first in its decision-making. Unfortunately, there has been some doubt recently about the policy direction of the UPND government.
Zambia is currently facing the challenge of high cost of living, making it difficult for poor families to make ends meet. Despite the huge negative impact of power cuts on the Zambian people, the government has brazenly increased the price of domestic electricity. The price of maize meal is unaffordable for ordinary families across the country. To make matters worse, the government has also allowed a milling company involved in the case to supply maize meal and animal feed that may be harmful to health.
The government’s action in allowing milling companies to supply the nation with a toxic staple food can be seen as a gross lack of responsibility. The so-called “toxic maize meal” affects all of us, without exception, making us potential victims.
It is difficult to understand why a government would expose its own people to such danger. It seems to stem from greed, selfishness, irresponsibility and putting business interests ahead of the well-being of its citizens.
The government has warned that there is maize flour on the market that contains toxins, but they have not revealed which brand or milling company is involved. It would be helpful for us if they were more transparent and shared this information with the public. Knowing the name of the milling company would enable us to avoid buying the affected maize flour. Unfortunately, we can only guess at this point. Zambians deserve better, especially in these tough economic times.
I can’t help but wonder why the UPND government has not mentioned the milling companies and brands yet, given the potential political repercussions. Do you share the same thought? Just food for thought. End of thought!
