US President Joe Biden spoke by phone with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
“President Biden stressed the importance of reaching and concluding an early agreement on a cessation of hostilities and prisoner releases,” a written White House statement said.
Biden reiterated in a phone interview that he would continue to support Israel in its fight against Iran and Iranian-backed groups.
Israel and Hamas held talks in Doha, the capital of Qatar, from August 15 to 16 to exchange prisoners and stop the ongoing attacks on Gaza.
The talks, hosted by the United States, Egypt and Qatar, failed to reach an agreement due to new conditions set by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
The talks are expected to continue in the Egyptian capital, Cairo.
Since October 7, 2023, Israel’s attacks on the Gaza Strip have killed 40,223 Palestinians, including 16,480 children and 10,980 women, and injured 92,981 Palestinians.
