Gigiri police officer’s child fainted after learning of mother’s alleged involvement, court hears

Five officers from the Gigiri police station will remain in custody as authorities investigate the jailbreak of 13 suspects, including Collins Jumaisi, the main suspect in the Kware murder case.

The officers are: CPL Ronald Babo, PC Evans Kipkirui, PC Mollent Achieng, PC Zachary Nyabuto and PC Gerald Mutuku One of eight senior military officers suspected of jailbreakThe five officers appeared in court on Wednesday.

During the mitigation hearing, Constable Mollent Achieng made an emotional plea to look after her child, who collapsed after learning of her alleged involvement. The court heard the child remains in a coma.

The Directorate of Criminal Investigation (DCI) is seeking an extension of the detention period for 14 days to thoroughly investigate the incident which has raised concerns about possible insider collusion.

Senior Chief Magistrate Martha Nanzushi will rule on Thursday on the miscellaneous application for the extension, which will allow the DCI to complete its investigation.

Acting Police Commissioner Gilbert Masengeli said initial investigations indicated the incident was an internal matter among on-duty police officers.

A police report dated OB 05/20/08/2024 showed that Kipkirui and Mutuku, who were on duty, reported the escape.

The report said that they and the canteen manager discovered the fugitive during a routine visit to the cell to deliver breakfast. They were shocked to find that the suspect escaped by cutting the barbed wire on the balcony.
