Today, 22nd August 2024 marked one of Malawi’s darkest days when two road accidents in Kasungu and Zomba districts left 30 people dead.

In Kasungu, 26 people were confirmed dead after a minibus hit and killed a cyclist and then caught fire. The bus then hit a tanker and caught fire burning the fuel.

In Zomba district, a minibus overturned twice at Mile 8 in the district, killing four people.

Eastern Police District Traffic Officer Augustine Chakanika confirmed the four deaths.

Chakanika said the accident occurred because the vehicle driven by Wilson Djemba Djemba (license plate number MHG 6746) was speeding.

In the same incident, 10 passengers were rushed to Zomba Central Hospital for treatment.

We are deeply saddened to learn of the tragic road accident in Kasungu which claimed 26 lives.

Meanwhile, President Dr. Lazarus Chakwera and the First Lady expressed their sadness over the tragic road accident that occurred in Kasungu Katto today which killed 26 persons including two children.

“May we find strength and comfort in God’s grace during these difficult times,” Chakwera said.

Inkosi Ya Makosi M’mbelwa in his tribute said among the 26 were three young men from Edingeni: Steve Ngwira, Kondwani Maseko Phiri and Wellington Jere.

He said: “We join the people of the country in expressing condolences to the families of the victims and pray for God’s blessing. May the souls of the deceased rest in peace forever.”
