William 'Danny' Mason appeals murder conviction to Caribbean court

Convicted murderer William “Danny” Mason is taking his case to the Belize Supreme Court of Appeal in a bid to once again overturn his conviction. Today, Mason’s lawyers confirmed that he will appeal to the Caribbean Court of Justice (CCJ) to overturn his conviction for the July 2016 murder of Dangriga pastor Llewellyn Lucas. Mason was convicted of murder in 2019, a conviction upheld by the Court of Appeal in July. Mason’s lawyer, Senior Counsel Hubert Elrington Sr., explains where they are currently in the final appeal process.

Hubert Elrington, Attorney: On July 11, the Court of Appeal dismissed his appeal against his murder conviction, so we will now make a final push to have that conviction quashed by the CCJ.”

reporterQ: So what does this mean now? CCJ?

Hubert Ellington, attorney: “That means we have to apply to the CCJ for leave to appeal, that’s the procedure, and then they will set a timetable.”

Mason is also awaiting a retrial on kidnapping charges in the Belmopan High Court, which declared a mistrial last month.
