Australia said it would invest more than $573 million to build a joint missile factory with Norway’s Kongsberg City Guard at Newcastle Airport on Australia’s east coast by the end of 2024.
The new plant will produce the Naval Strike and Joint Strike long-range missiles. Australian Defense Minister Pat Conroy said in a statement that the plant will be one of only two places in the world capable of producing the missiles, following the only other facility outside of Kongsberg, Norway.
Australia also announced that it would increase production of self-defense weapons under defense to enhance the Australian Defense Force’s long-range attack capabilities, while tensions in the Indo-Pacific region are increasing.
The new plant will also develop hypersonic missiles in cooperation with the United States and Britain’s Okus Defense Technologies, and will begin joint production of self-propelled missiles with the United States next year.
“Establishing a facility at Newcastle Airport will help boost Australia’s self-confidence and increase its war reserve, while supporting Australia’s domestic economy and defence industry,” Conroy’s office said in a statement.
