In a major push to promote youth empowerment, Government has allocated K44,976,462.40 to support 5,441 young people in Lusaka District under the Constituency Development Fund (CDF) Skills Bursary Scheme 2024. The scheme, which is managed by the Lusaka City Council, aims to provide necessary skills training to young people in all seven constituencies in the district.
The disbursement of funds has enabled thousands of young people to study various vocational and skill development courses at TEVET-accredited institutions. A thorough verification process was conducted by local authorities to ensure that all 5,441 beneficiaries were eligible, providing them with the opportunity to receive training in areas such as carpentry, tailoring, fashion design, plumbing, culinary arts, mechanics, electricians and driving.
The impact of the skills component of the CDF scholarships has been far-reaching, with many youth beneficiaries graduating with valuable skills that have enhanced their self-reliance, while others are continuing their studies. The programme underscores the government’s commitment to investing in the future of young people and ensuring that young people have access to education and skills development at all levels.
Among the constituencies, Kabwata has the largest number of beneficiaries, with 1,112 young people receiving the grants, followed by Chawama with 815 beneficiaries, Matero with 788, and Lusaka Central with 774. Mandvu has 737 beneficiaries, while Munali and Kanyama have the least number of beneficiaries, at 688 and 547 respectively.
This move reflects the Government’s commitment to equipping young people with the necessary skills to enable them to contribute meaningfully to the country’s economy and improve their lives.
