televisionThe 39th Barbados International Hockey Festival continued on Tuesday in Wildey, the home of hockey, with the Masters returning to its former glory with the Old and Drag Down (ODD) team winning both games.
The week-long festival resumed at the National Hockey Center in Wildey with several matches played, with the ODD team, which features several well-known veterans, performing well, defeating the Hikers 2-0 and narrowly beating the A Badd Connection (ABC) team 1-0 later in the day.
Defending Masters champions the University of the West Indies (UWI) Blackbirds played out a 0-0 draw with the All Stars, who earlier in the day beat the New York Islanders 4-0 on a sixth-minute goal from Laurendo Davis, with teammates Terence Prescod (9th), Errol Clarke (28th) and Karen Bannister (37th) all contributing later.
The New York Islanders struggled once again in the Masters as they were defeated 3-1 by the Pacers, led by goal scorers from Amanda Garrett in the 17th minute, Harry France in the 20th minute, and Sharteza King in the 23rd minute.
In the mixed bracket, the defending champion Rockets were unstoppable, defeating ABC 2-0, with Dario Lewis scoring on a shot in the 6th minute and Marlon Daniel converting a corner kick in the 30th minute.
The Rockets advanced to the playoffs at a fairly fast pace, defeating the Madhatters 3-0 with ease. Thanks again to Lewis, who scored a goal in the 37th minute, while veteran Angela Thompson added two more goals in the 24th and 40th minutes of the game.
In the mixed match, the Hikers beat UWI 2-1, but the UWI Blackbirds beat ABC 1-0, with Ahijah Springer scoring the only goal in the fourth minute.
Unfortunately, the UWI Blackbirds lost their two matches against Total Hockey Club (THC) and ABC by scores of 1-0 and 2-0 respectively. However, the women’s team did not disappoint as they defeated Toronto United 3-2 and Dubard 2-0.
Dubard’s team drew 0-0 against Georgetown Cricket Club (GCC) and won 2-0 against the Barbados Teachers Union. The ABC men’s team lost 2-0 against THC.
The Barbados International Ice Hockey Festival was founded in 1985 by Mike Irwin, a well-known ice hockey enthusiast, Tony Cozier, a famous cricket commentator, and Winsmore Humphrey, then president of the Barbados Ice Hockey Federation.
