Seven civilians were killed at Debrekaranyo Mahamalem Church in Motakaranyo town in East Gojam region last Friday when Fano militants attacked government security forces, according to the church pastor and residents who were there at the time.
Residents said the dead were six workers and a model student who were digging a grave for a nun who died a day earlier.
Residents said there was no exchange of fire between government security forces and the dead who were digging graves.
When we asked them about this, Mamaru Ainabeba, the administrator of the Two Hands Nese area, said he could not give an answer.
Ato Mustele Birhanu, head of the Bahir Dar branch of the Ethiopian Human Rights Commission, said the commission had received the information and was investigating the matter.
