New Delhi: Continuing his tradition of wearing headgear that reflects the diverse cultures of different states of India, Prime Minister Narendra Modi was spotted wearing a distinctive cap from the hill country of Uttarakhand as he arrived at the National War Memorial to pay tribute to Indian soldiers on India’s 73rd Republic Day.
The Prime Minister also wore the ‘Brahmakamal’, which is the state flower of Uttarakhand. PM Modi is very fond of the ‘Brahmakamal’ and wears the flower every time he performs ‘pooja’ in Kedarnath.
Apart from this, the Prime Minister also wore a shawl from Manipur. Interestingly, last year, PM Modi wore a colorful ‘Halari Pagh’ (royal turban) which was gifted to him by the royal family of Jamnagar at an event.
Interestingly, PM Modi’s sartorial choice at the 73rd Republic Day event was linked to the states of Uttarakhand and Manipur, which are going to elections next month.
Prime Minister Modi paid tributes to the fallen soldiers at the newly built National War Memorial (NWM) in the morning before attending the 73rd Republic Day celebrations.
Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, Minister of State for Defence Ajay Bhatt, Defence Secretary Ajay Kumar and the chiefs of Army, Air Force and Navy were also present on the ceremony.
The service guards consist of seven soldiers from each service. This year, the guards are commanded by Lieutenant Colonel Amit Kumar Rathi, a naval officer. The contingent commander is Squadron Leader Akash Gangas.
When the Prime Minister laid a wreath, the guards of the three armed forces first offered “Salami Shastra” and then “Shok Shastra”. At the same time, the bugler blew “Last Post”. Afterwards, the whole audience observed “two minutes of silence”, after which the bugler blew “Rouse” and the guards offered “Salami Shastra” again.
The Prime Minister later endorsed his speech in the digital visitor’s book at the National War Memorial.Afterwards, PM Modi and other dignitaries will proceed to the saluting stand at Rajpath to watch the Republic Day parade.
The Republic Day Parade 2022 will showcase India’s military prowess, cultural diversity and many unique initiatives to celebrate the 75th anniversary of India’s Independence as part of the ‘Azadi ka Amrit Mahotsav’ event.
President Ram Nath Kovind will lead the nation in celebrating the 73rd Republic Day on January 26, 2022. This year’s celebrations are special as Republic Day coincides with the 75th anniversary of India’s independence and the day will be celebrated as ‘Azadi ka Amrit Mahotsav’ across the country.
To mark the occasion, the Ministry of Defence has conceptualised a host of new events, including a major parade on Rajpath on January 26 and a ‘Repel the Enemy’ ceremony at Vijay Chowk on January 29. It has also been decided that the Republic Day celebrations will last for a week, from January 23 to January 30, every year.
The celebrations started on January 23, the birth anniversary of great freedom fighter Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose, and culminated on January 30, the Martyrs’ Day.
According to the Ministry of Defence, for the first time, the Indian Air Force (IAF) will put up a major flypast with 75 aircraft or helicopters. During the ‘repel’ ceremony, a drone show with 1,000 indigenously developed drones is planned, while projection mapping will also be showcased for the first time during the Republic Day parade.
This is the first time that 480 dancers who will perform in the cultural programme of the parade have been selected through the nationwide Vande Bharatam dance competition.
The main parade will also see the ‘Shaheedon Ko Shat Shat Naman’ programme launched by the National Cadets for the first time in the parade, along with a display of 10 scrolls of 75 metres in length prepared during the ‘Kala Kumbh’ event and the installation of 10 large LED screens to provide better viewing experience to the audience.
The parade on King’s Road will start at 10:30 am instead of 10 am earlier to allow for better viewing of the parade and flypast. Special arrangements have been made considering the current COVID-19 situation.
The number of spectator seats has been significantly reduced, and people are encouraged to register online to watch the live festivities. “Only adults who have received two vaccinations/children 15 years and older who have received one vaccination will be allowed to attend the parade. Children under 15 years will not be admitted,” the statement read.
To watch the Republic Day parade and the ‘Repel the Enemy’ ceremony, some autorickshaw drivers, construction workers, volunteers and frontline health workers will be invited.
