Robert Downey Jr. has finally revealed how he came to return to Marvel.

The 59-year-old actor appeared on Tuesday’s The Hollywood Reporter’s Awards Talk Podcast And confirmed that Marvel Pictures President Kevin Feige persuaded him Return to MCU Playing the role of the notorious villain Doctor Doom.

“At one point, Susan (Downey) and I were sitting with Feige, and he said, ‘I’ve been wondering if you’d come back,’ and Susan said, ‘Wait, what role would you come back in?'”

Downey Jr. said he and his wife (also his producing partner) witnessed firsthand that Feige, 51, “is a very mature, creative thinker” when they pitched him to play Doctor Doom.

According to Downey Jr., Feige wanted to make sure they didn’t “backslide” or “lose expectations.” Shocking casting decision.

“He mentioned Victor von Doom,” the Oscar winner continued. “I looked at the character as research and was like, ‘Wow.’ But then he said, ‘Let’s put Victor von Doom in perspective.'”

Downey Jr. explained that the official announcement came after he and Feige met at the home of Disney CEO Bob Iger.

“I don’t know how to describe that experience,” he said. “I’ve had a lot of cool experiences. We went to Iger’s place, sat down, and I started saying, ‘I really want to be…’ and he said, ‘I love it.’ He loved it.”

The 73-year-old Iger then invited Downey Jr. and Feige Disney Imagineering It was another amazing experience for Downey Jr. in Florida.

“You want to talk about two people who are not easily shocked, let alone shocked at the same time,” the “Oppenheimer” star said.

“I can’t say too much, but what’s happening there right now is so much more than I ever expected, it’s no wonder I feel so amazing. And I feel like it’s also the only way to give the entertainment-seeking audience something they might be eager to experience, so that I can continue to foster interest in the future of entertainment.”

Downey Jr. surprised Marvel fans last month when he revealed at Comic-Con that he would be playing Doctor Doom.

“New mask, same mission,” he said at the event. “What can I say, I love playing complex characters.”

Downey Jr. previously played Tony Stark/Iron Man until the beloved hero was killed off in 2019’s Avengers: Endgame.
