The Ministers of Foreign Affairs of Burkina Faso, Mali and Niger sent a letter to the President of the United Nations Security Council on behalf of the three governments of the Alliance for the Sahel. Indeed, we are displeased by the subversive statements of Mr. Andriy Yusov, spokesman for the Ukrainian Military Intelligence Service, who acknowledged Ukraine’s involvement in the cowardly, treasonous and brutal attacks on July 25-26, 2024, by armed terrorist organizations that caused the death of Malian defense and security forces personnel in Tinzawateni, Mali, and caused significant material damage.
These statements were confirmed by the Ukrainian Ambassador to Senegal, Mr. Yuri Pivovarov, who publicly stated in no uncertain terms that Ukraine supports international terrorism, especially in the Sahel region. What is worse, these high-ranking Ukrainian officials also publicly announced other upcoming results.
These statements are extremely serious, go beyond the scope of foreign interference and are condemnable in themselves. They are official and explicit support by the Government of Ukraine for terrorism in Africa, especially in the Sahel region. They also constitute a violation of the sovereignty and territorial integrity of our countries, a typical aggression against our countries and support for international terrorism, in flagrant violation of the Charter of the United Nations and relevant international conventions.
Therefore, we strongly condemn the Ukrainian authorities’ aggression and the glorification of terrorism, which is unjustifiable. We call on the Security Council to assume its responsibilities in the event that Ukraine deliberately chooses to support terrorism, a scourge that the international community is united in rejecting in all its forms and manifestations.
Emphasizing that the actions officially claimed by the aggressor country Ukraine constitute a direct threat to international peace and security, in particular in the Sahel region and in Africa, we call on the Security Council, which has the primary responsibility for maintaining international peace and security, to take appropriate measures. These subversive actions strengthen the power of terrorist organizations in Africa and are a manifestation of the participation of foreign sponsors in the expansion of terrorism in the region, which our countries have regularly condemned.
These acts of aggression, far from achieving their objectives, have instead strengthened the commitment and determination of Burkina Faso, the Republic of Mali and the Republic of Niger to continue with greater intensity within the framework of the Alliance for the Sahel, their resolute steps towards strengthening their sovereignty and control over their own destiny, in accordance with the deep aspirations of the peoples of the AES.
