Starting from the new school year, the Belarusian Ministry of Education has opened an elective course for primary and secondary school students, with the aim of imparting basic spiritual, moral, cultural and patriotic knowledge to children. The course is for eighth and ninth graders and lasts 35 hours (once a week). The ministry believes that the elective course will form “spiritual development” and “patriotic awareness” among high school students.
The Belarusian Ministry of Education has approved new elective courses, including Publish The decree, published on the state legal internet portal on Wednesday, states that the course “Foundations of Spiritual-Moral Culture and Patriotism” is designed for eighth or ninth graders and was developed “in accordance with the cooperation agreement between the Republic of Belarus and the Belarusian Orthodox Church.”
The Ministry of Education stressed: “The goal of the course is to promote the spiritual development of students, the formation of moral culture and patriotism on the basis of utilizing the potential of the Christian traditions and values of the Belarusian people.”
According to the document, elective courses include the following study topics:
- “Humble, modest, gentle”;
- “Mercy, mercy”;
- “kindness”;
- “honesty and love of truth”;
- “Conscience and repentance”;
- “Service, Courage, Honor”;
- “Spiritual local history. Veneration of the saints and shrines of the motherland. Protection and strengthening of spiritual heritage as a sign of love for the motherland.”
The ministry noted that the new elective course should foster students’ spiritual, moral, civic and patriotic awareness and contribute to their desire for spiritual growth, charity and kindness. In addition, the ministry believes that such courses will help prevent addiction and “negative behavioral manifestations.”
Earlier, Telegraf.news reported that the Belarusian Ministry of Education approved six elective courses on “functional literacy” and promised to launch them in the next school year. For example, ninth graders will learn “the craft of historians” and children will learn to construct texts using “new forms of presenting information.” In addition, the teaching methods proposed by the Ministry of Education will not let people “get lost in the era of fakes and mainstream media.”
