MEMPHIS, Tenn. (WREG) — Two days after a one-year-old girl was pronounced dead from multiple injuries, two men accused of her murder appeared in court.
The two people accused of her murder, her aunt Kiya Moore, 21, and her boyfriend Dejon Smith, 34, appeared before a judge yesterday.
The judge told the couple that if convicted, it could result in the death penalty. They were ordered to return to court to inform the judge whether they could pay for their attorneys.
On Saturday morning, August 16, Carly Moore was pronounced dead after doctors at LeBonheur Children’s Hospital said she suffered a skull fracture, brain bleeding and even blood in her lungs.
Smith stood up first, and the judge read aloud the felony charges of first-degree murder, child abuse and neglect before rescheduling the case for the next day.
Next up was Moore, who was out on bond on child abuse charges. Moore faces the same charges as Smith.
