Mulanje, August 20, Mana: The Women’s Legal Resource Centre (WOLREC) in partnership with Oxfam Malawi and the Government of Malawi, met with different political candidates and aspirants from Mulanje District.
The conference aims to promote political participation of women, youth under 35 and people with disabilities as a way to promote gender-transformative and youth-inclusive democracy in Malawi.
This activity is funded by the European Union.
Rhoda Gadama Misomali, shadow MP for Mulanje Central constituency, said one of the reasons some women failed to win elections was a lack of resources, which limited their ability to cover the entire region.
“Male candidates often receive more support than their female counterparts, especially in terms of funding. Many women lack the financial resources needed to run effective campaigns and build visibility in their constituencies,” Misomali said.
However, she said there is a need for strong civic education for candidates and voters so that they have a deep understanding of politics and everyone can play their part to drive effective development across the country.
In her speech, Oxfam Malawi Country Director Lingalireni Mihowa commended all the political candidates who participated in the discussion.
“This move will help promote reconciliation between candidates from different political parties and foster unity, which is essential for development,” Mihova said.
Mihova therefore pledged that Oxfam and WOLREC will do their utmost to support women’s participation in politics and their presence in decision-making positions at all levels.
