BERLIN: World Health Organization officials stressed on Tuesday (Aug 20) that whether it is a new strain or an old one, mpox is not a new type of COVID-19 because authorities know how to control its spread.

“Together we can and must tackle porcine parvovirus,” Hans Kluge, WHO Regional Director for Europe, told a news conference.

“So, will we choose to build systems to control and eliminate MPox on a global scale? Or will we enter another cycle of panic and neglect? How we respond now and in the coming years will be a key test for Europe and the world,” he added.

Poxvirus is a viral infection that causes purulent lesions and flu-like symptoms. The illness is usually mild but can be fatal.

MPox virus type 1b has attracted global attention because it appears to be more easily spread through close daily contact. Confirmed in Sweden last week And it is related to the continued expansion of the epidemic in Africa.

Kluge said the focus on the new Clade 1 strain gave Europe an opportunity to refocus on the less serious Clade 2 strain, including providing better public health advice and surveillance.

Kluge added that currently around 100 new cases of the MPOX type 2 strain are reported each month in Europe.
